How to Reach Zostel Plus Panchgani

We drove from Andheri in Mumbai and reached Zostel Plus Panchgani in about 7 hours, including a one-hour break for breakfast. The journey through winding roads and scenic landscapes added to the excitement of the trip. If you don’t want to drive, you can also take a cab or an overnight bus from Mumbai or Pune to Panchgani.

Once you arrive, there are plenty of cabs available to commute within Panchgani or Mahabaleshwar. These operate at fixed rates, ensuring hassle-free travel around the area. Whether you’re exploring the local markets or heading to nearby attractions, getting around is easy and convenient.

Accommodation Options at Zostel Plus Panchgani

Superior Deluxe Room: Luxury Redefined

My wife and I stayed in the Superior Deluxe Room, priced at ₹11,000 + taxes per night during the festive season. On weekdays, the price drops to ₹9500 + taxes. This room stands out for its spacious design and thoughtful amenities:

  • Large Balcony: Equipped with chairs, a table, and a suspended hammock, it offers stunning valley views. It became our favorite spot for family conversations over tea, coffee, and snacks from the in-house restaurant, Bombax.
  • Luxurious Interiors: The room features a comfortable bed facing the balcony, allowing you to wake up to mesmerizing views. Amenities include a TV, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a kettle with a curated selection of teas and coffees, and complimentary snacks.
  • Bathroom: The bathroom is equally impressive, boasting an indoor shower, high-quality beauty and hygiene products, and an outdoor shower that adds a unique touch.

Mountain View Room: Compact Yet Comfortable

My children stayed in the Mountain View Room, priced at ₹3,499 + taxes per night. Designed as a converted shipping container, this is the most basic option at Zostel Plus Panchgani but doesn’t compromise on essentials:

  • Amenities: Despite its compact size, it includes a well-sized bathroom, a TV, and a balcony with valley views.
  • Comfortable Bed: The bed is spacious enough for two adults over six feet tall. However, the room lacks a fridge.

Recommendation: Deluxe Room with Balcony

If you’re looking for a balance of luxury and value, the Deluxe Room with a balcony and valley view is an excellent choice. Priced at ₹6500 on weekdays, it offers similar amenities to the Superior Deluxe Room, minus the hammock and with a slightly smaller balcony.

Property Highlights

Zostel Plus Panchgani is a thoughtfully designed property built on multiple levels, ensuring every room offers panoramic valley views. Here’s what makes the property stand out:

  • Maintenance and Staff: The property is impeccably maintained, and the courteous staff add to the experience. Valet parking is also available for added convenience.
  • Game Room: A large game room equipped with board games, a pool table, poker table, carrom, foosball, and table tennis ensures entertainment for all ages.
  • Daily Activities: From pottery to palm and face reading, the property organizes engaging activities at nominal rates.
  • Evening Entertainment: Musical performances in the amphitheater allow guests to unwind with their own alcohol while purchasing mixers from the restaurant.
  • Trekking Adventures: Sunrise, sunset, and night treks are available for a small fee (₹200–250). However, better communication regarding difficulty levels and required equipment would enhance the experience.

Additionally, the property’s location in Panchgani makes it an ideal base to explore the surrounding area, known for its lush greenery, strawberry farms, and colonial charm. The quiet and clean environment of Zostel Plus adds to its allure, providing a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Culinary Delights at Bombax

The in-house restaurant, Bombax, offers reasonably priced food with excellent quality. During our stay, we enjoyed two large meals along with some snacks along the way, a few highlights:

  • Mutton Biryani: Flavorful and perfectly cooked.
  • Chili Cheese Toast: A delicious snack to pair with tea.
  • Chicken Tikka Pizza: A unique fusion dish that didn’t disappoint.

The restaurant’s large outdoor seating area provides an idyllic setting to enjoy your meals with stunning valley views. The ambiance is casual yet welcoming, making it a great place to relax and savor your food. The menu features a diverse range of dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone’s palate. Whether you’re craving Indian classics or experimenting with international flavors, Bombax has got you covered.

For breakfast, Bombax offers a buffet at just ₹300, which includes a generous spread of dishes. The quality and variety at this price are truly remarkable, making it a must-try during your stay.

Activities Outside Zostel

Kate’s Point

We visited Kate’s Point in Mahabaleshwar, a must-see spot offering breathtaking views of the Krishna River and Dhom Lake. Named after Sir John Malcom’s daughter Kate, this vantage point is a favorite among tourists for its serene beauty and historical significance. The cool breeze and the picturesque landscape make it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll find yourself lost in the tranquility of this place.

Pratapgad Fort

Although we didn’t visit this time, Pratapgad Fort is on my list for our next trip. This historical fort is a testament to Maratha architecture and offers a glimpse into India’s rich history. Built in 1656 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it’s a symbol of resilience and strategy. The fort’s strategic location offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys, making it a must-visit for history buffs and adventure seekers alike.

Museums and Attractions

Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar have several museums and attractions geared towards children and families, such as Mapro Garden and local fruit-processing factories. While I didn’t visit these, they’re worth considering if you’re traveling with kids or want to explore the local culture.

Travel Tip

Traffic around Mapro can be heavy, especially during peak hours. Plan your travel accordingly to avoid delays and make the most of your day trips.

The Zostel Vibe

Zostel Plus Panchgani attracts a youthful crowd, with most of the guests being young travelers. This creates a vibrant and chill atmosphere across the property. My wife and I were among the oldest guests during our stay, and while we appreciated the energy and liveliness, it’s worth noting that this may not suit everyone’s preferences.

Guests are allowed to bring their own alcohol and enjoy it in public areas, and there are ample designated spaces for smoking cigarettes. If you’re someone who prefers a quieter or more traditional environment, Zostel Plus Panchgani might not be the ideal choice for you.

Additionally, the property is built on a gradient with multiple staircases and no elevators. While this adds to its charm, it also means that it may not be suitable for elders or people with mobility issues. Keep this in mind when planning your visit.

Dining and Shopping in Panchgani

Must-Visit Restaurants

  1. Paradise by Meher Cafe: Known for its authentic Parsi dishes like Mutton Kheema and Berry Pulao, this cafe is a paradise for non-veg lovers. The flavors are rich, and the presentation is impeccable, making it a culinary delight.
  2. Daawat-e-Khass: A new Indian restaurant offering decent Chinese food, though better options are available. It’s a good choice for a quick meal but doesn’t stand out in the local dining scene.
  3. Lucky Cafe and Bakery: A small eatery serving delicious sandwiches and burgers at nominal prices, made with freshly baked bread. Perfect for breakfast or a quick snack, this cafe has a cozy and inviting vibe.
  4. Hilltop Ice-Creams: The best place for strawberry and cream with strawberry ice cream in Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. Don’t miss this dessert spot, as it’s a local favorite for a reason.

Local Purchases

  1. Pomona’s Strawberry Wine: Bought from Just Chill and Wine, this is a great souvenir to take back home.
  2. Fresh Produce: Strawberries, figs, raspberries, guava, cherry tomatoes, and bottle gourd from Santosh Bhilare in Panchgani Market (+919270165713). The produce is farm-fresh and of excellent quality, making it a worthwhile purchase.
  3. Snacks and Fudge: High-quality peanuts, fudge, and snacks from Dhananjay in Panchgani Market, preferred over mass-produced items from Mapro and Malas. These make for great gifts or personal treats.

Zostel Plus Panchgani is a perfect blend of luxury, adventure, and relaxation.
